Like What You See?

In case you were wondering, I produce all the photography on this website. Except for portraits of me, which I have done professionally by other photographers in my local market, I create all of the pictures on this website.

I started my creative profession as a photographer a couple decades ago. You see, I really love photography. I’ve been working with it as a free lance career and creative outlet for my whole adult life.

Here’s the thing. Product photography is not easy. I believe knitwear and crochet designs necessitate another crafter to capture the nuance of the design. Proper photography will show potential crafters how your design is constructed.

Pictures sell product.

To stand out in the marketplace, good photography is a must have item. You can have the greatest most life changing design in the world, but if you neglect to show it off to it’s fullest potential, it may go completely unnoticed. Or even worse, it may get noticed for looking terrible in the pictures. Either one of these is disastrous to a designer.

If you are another creative entrepreneur struggling with photography for your online brand, I am here to help, but I only take a handful of private clients. I specialize in the area of knitwear and crochet photographed on models. But I’m also available to photograph jewelry and some sewing projects.

Let me do the heavy lifting.

I have a professional camera and lenses with computer equipment set up to render color properly. Think color calibration is not important? Remember THIS? Please read this is a short blog article I wrote on the importance of color calibration and the effect of poor white balance in digital photography.

I shoot knitwear pictures exclusively on models. Models have features that photograph better than regular people AND they like to be photographed. Having someone in the picture who enjoys modeling and wants to be there really improves the look of product photos! I can help you select the perfect person for your design.

Here are a couple of scenarios that might sound familiar to you

  • You spend months and months making yarn selections, getting your charts tech edited to perfection, and all the bugs worked out by your diligent team of test knitters. Your new pattern is written and ready to publish! Wait a minute, better take a couple of quick photos. So you or a well meaning friend get out the iPhone and take a couple of quick snapshots. Hmmm. Why does the blue look purple? Where’s all the stitch detail?
  • Your new design is ready to go and you anxiously call your daughter to come over and model for you. Except for one thing. She doesn’t feel like it. So you insist. What do you get? A bunch of pictures of a sour puss wearing the creation you have worked on for months.

I am located in Virginia Beach, VA. It is easy to get here, and we have ample hotels and restaurants. I recommend that if you would like to be involved in the photography shoot, that you travel here. It’s far less expensive travel-wise for the designer to pack a few FO’s in a suitcase and come here. I know our locations and I know my models. Think of your trip to Virginia Beach as a working vacation.

I can also receive your shipment through the mail. I do suggest using UPS or FEDEX so we have tracking information. Most of my clients ship their pieces to me, and I handle the rest. I do encourage you to come with your pieces if possible so you can style your product and meet your models. It is exciting to see your carefully crafted piece on a model in a photo shoot!

Does your brand showcase you as the primary model? Hey! That’s awesome! I would love to photograph you in your beautiful creations. You can also use the opportunity to have new headshots taken for your blog and other social media.

Photo shoots start at $395. That includes photography and edited images for both print and online usage. For the base fee, I can create images of 3 simple accessories or 2 garments. The more complex the piece, the longer it will take for me to capture all the details in a way that feels natural and artistic. Professional hair and makeup and styling are also available for an extra fee.
