“We live in the information age.”

What does that mean? My interpretation is that we are all swamped every day with messages competing for our attention. The marketplace is extremely crowded. So how does anybody stand out? I believe that sharing beautiful, truthful images of yourself or your product is a good start.

There are all sorts of statistics about status updates containing images getting more shares and likes. Think about it. In your own life, aren’t you more likely to share something if it is accompanied by a picture?

Communicating with imagery is an ancient form of language. Before we had alphabets and words, we had pictures. Think about the Lascaux Cave Paintings. Absolutely primal in their communication, and yet thousands of years later, we still understand their story. That is the power of an image.

“A Picture is Worth 1000 Words.”

We’ve all heard that phrase expressed many, many times. How true it is! The key thing is this: what are those words and what do they say about you? One snapshot of a drinking binge on a facebook profile can be enough to ruin a potential job opportunity. On the other hand, a well executed professional headshot on a Linked In page can mean the difference between getting the interview or not. The image conveys information about you, about your trustworthiness, and about your professionalism.

The pictures we post tell our stories. If we are competing in a crowded marketplace, doesn’t it make sense to invest in the best possible photography so we convey the right message? The playing field is pretty level on the internet with large retailers posting right alongside independent artists. We can’t compete with them on price, so we have to compete in terms of product quality and customer service. Showing your product in the best possible light is absolutely essential to get noticed.

Knitwear is a very different medium to photograph than other aspects of the garment industry. Knitters are looking for specific information when they browse pictures and try to decide if they want to knit a particular pattern or not. Great photography is one way to convince a knitter that your pattern is worth buying and knitting. If you’re still posting poorly lit camera phone pictures of someone who doesn’t want to model, what do you think that says about you to your potential customers? If you don’t believe your product is worth the investment to show it off, then why would a customer believe it’s worth spending the time to make? This is the subtlety of communication our images are sharing. Make sure your pictures are saying good things about you and your products.
