Laura Nelkin is a total rockstar in knitwear circles. She’s absolutely prolific in the amount of sheer content she produces. Best of all? She’s super nice!!! She’s a really good teacher, and she’s so supportive of her fan base. We love you Laura!
Later this month, I have the honor of meeting her in person. She’s teaching hands on, technique classes at one of our LYS’s, The Yarn Club, here in Virginia Beach. I’m signed up for the Sunday section called Designing with Beads. As part of this exclusive arrangement, she’s even designed a shawl just for The Yarn Club. They will be working on it all day Saturday the 21st. I’m hoping to attend for even an hour to get photos. There’s a special party I’m attending on that Friday as well. I will be getting photos of the party and my class for sure!
Today I’d like to share one of Laura’s new designs with you. It’s a fingerless mitt pattern called Prolix. You know I’m ALL ABOUT fingerless mitts! So it was a natural for me to feature this pattern for you.
This is a substantial fingerless mitt, but it knits up FAST. This set of mitts was knitted my my good friend, who knits samples for yarn shops. She shared a gorgeous selection of pieces she’s done. However, since I’m going to meet Laura Nelkin in a couple of weeks, I wanted to show you these newest mitts today.
On her Ravelry page, Laura says this about her newest Mitt pattern:
Take your wrapping skills up a notch by using multiple needle sizes to play with stitch length and density. This creates a ruched fabric. These mitts have a long cuff that can be worn pulled up or slouched down, and an integrated thumb gusset.
As soon as these mitts came off the needles, my teenager began campaigning for a pair of her own (in black, of course). In my world her approval is pretty much the most accurate test of a successful design! Needless to say, we both will get our own version of this super-fast and functional knit.
These are knit in Misti Alpaca Qolla Worsted using the QW17 Alita colorway. They were made using size 6US and 7US needles and and 8US for the BO. This is a gorgeous yarn! It’s available at The Yarn Club, so if you are in the Hampton Roads area, call Andrea and see if they have any of this still available.
The colorway is super fun in this knit, but really any worsted weight yarn is going to look good in this pattern. It is available only in the book Knockout Knits, so you will need to invest in the book to obtain this pattern. But let me tell you something, people. It’s a gorgeous book! Who doesn’t want another gorgeous and well-written knitting book to put in the library?
The Prolix Mitts are another great design for spring. It’s still so chilly outside, but who wants to wear black right now? (besides teenagers) I love being able to bring a little color out into the drab world of winter. This is absolutely a weekend project. So, get your yarn on the way home and knit them up by the fire over the weekend. Before you know it, you’ll actually be looking forward to Monday.
