Prolix Redux

This month is the month of Laura Nelkin. Last week I featured some of the photography I did of her new design for Knockout Knits. The pattern is called Prolix.

Here’s how Laura describes them on her Ravelry page:

Take your wrapping skills up a notch by using multiple needle sizes to play with stitch length and density. This creates a ruched fabric. These mitts have a long cuff that can be worn pulled up or slouched down, and an integrated thumb gusset.

As soon as these mitts came off the needles, my teenager began campaigning for a pair of her own (in black, of course). In my world her approval is pretty much the most accurate test of a successful design! Needless to say, we both will get our own version of this super-fast and functional knit.

I will definitely be knitting up a set (or two) of these for myself. Right now I working on my own Pioneer Cuff. You see, I’m taking a hands on class with Laura on March 22, 2015 when she visits The Yarn Club here in Virginia Beach. I signed up for Designing with Beads. I’m STOKED!!!

Right now I’m taking her “Knitting with Beads” class on Craftsy. If you don’t know about Craftsy, then I highly recommend taking a look at the site. It’s an online learning school featuring all sorts of classes. I have worked through several knitting classes, and love them. Because I’m taking that bead class with Laura personally, I thought knitting my own Pioneer cuff or two prior to taking a class from her would be a good idea.

I never thought about knitted jewelry before this. You know how much I love a quick knit, so this cuff pattern is very appealing to me. It’s basic lace with some beading. The creative potential is HUGE. What a lovely gift item. It’s also something knitted we can wear in the summer months, and I’m all for that.

I’m also signed up for her “Design Your Own Cowl” class and “Mastering Lace Shawls” also on Craftsy. I need to sit down with the class materials and delve into the cowl class this summer. I would like new designs for fall, and we typically work on all of that well ahead of the seasons. I’m not sure I’ll ever have the patience to knit a big lace shawl, but I am interested in learning new techniques from Laura. You never go wrong learning about new things. It doesn’t matter if you use it or not. What’s important is expose yourself to new techniques and to keep learning new skills.

Keep on knitting, my friends!!
